Itch-E & Scratch-E Talk About ‘Other Planets’
"Other Planets" is the first single from the forthcoming album "Hooray for Everything!!!".
Paul: It had a twisted journey getting to where it is now. We used a couple of fun techniques to get it to there. As an experiment, I started writing a quick Eno-esque ambient painting with Andy outside of the room. We then traded places. I told Andy what key it was in, and what tempo it was but he couldn't hear what I had done. He did his funky bass thing.
Andy: The bassline you hear is the kind of thing that I get from knowing the notes I want and being really clumsy with my timing. Then we quantize it - i.e., use the computer to make it really tight - and it sounds funky – in theory! But there was a twist to this one. Once I’d played in that one bar bassline, Paul suddenly heard the track in 3/4 instead of 4/4 – so he quantized it that way. It’s the first track we’ve ever written in 3/4. That is, it has three beats to the bar, which gives it a galloping feel.
Paul: We then listened to the two parts together and were surprised at the result. It felt very other worldly. Andy suggested the lyric.
Andy: Because it was so spacey sounding I was reminded of a phrase from a German 20th century poet, Stefan George. I know very little about his poems, but I do know from reading the book ‘The Rest Is Noise’ by Alex Ross that this one phrase ‘I breathe the air of other planets’ is a significant one for 20th century orchestral music. The reason is that the composer Schoenberg set the poem to music and, at the precise moment that line comes in, makes the music lose its tonal centre. So that line signifies the point at which Western music went atonal - and lost much of its audience, ahaha! (although it’s the kind of music that everyone is familiar with from horror and suspense movies, so maybe that’s not really true) . It’s a very beautiful and frightening line, in my opinion. The line had a lot of resonance for me. It suggested someone who was both alien and fully at home, fully adapted. Obviously, Schoenberg picked up on that. I had an idea to put that line down with a particularly weird, angular vocal melody, so I sang it into the microphone and Paul recorded. Obviously I couldn’t sing well so Paul had to treat it.
Paul: I had just discovered a new vocal/pitch technique and applied it. Awesome, we had a cool instrumental.
Andy: Yes, we had our space track, with the Enoesque chords, and my voice repitched by Paul so it sounds ghostly and inhuman. We even added a few shooting stars and particulate ‘space-cloud’ sounds. We were heading in a Pink Floyd direction.
Paul: So how did the rap get in there? About five years ago when I was touring Europe with The Dissociatives, I bumped into a 17-year-old fan of the band and had a crazy night out in Paris with him. Fast forward five years and I bumped into the same fan in New York. We struck up a friendship. On the final night, Fred (who goes by the recording name MDNA) played me some of his raps. I have an aversion to white rapping, but I loved his style and originality. On my return to Australia, I told Andy about this amazing crossing of paths. We emailed some instrumentals to New York and you are hearing the fruits of this collaboration.
Andy: When he mailed back his rap our jaws dropped to the floor. It was amazing. He’s added a whole screwed up lifestyle dimension to it. Even though he’d gone off on a tangent, it still somehow worked lyrically with the ‘other planets’ concept. The lost-in-space thing becomes a metaphor for a personal journey into isolation. Yet this narrator also seems perfectly at home and comfortable with his direction. It’s a track I find exciting and disturbing at the same time. The chorus in particular gets me, because he really puts his fists up there. You don’t expect a sexual freak to be ready to stand up and fight like that. The narrator is a freak with teeth, sharp teeth. You wouldn’t mess with him. Awesome.

Itch-E & Scratch-E To Release Album 'Hooray For Everything!!!'
Itch-E & Scratch-E have just announced a new album for 2010! Paul Mac and Andy Rantzen are currently in the studio putting the final touches to the appropriately titled Hooray For Everything!!!
Sure to excite long-time fans, who landed their ARIA Award winning single ‘Sweetness and Light’ into the #21 position in the Triple J Hottest 100, as well as a new generation of electronic music lovers, Paul Mac says of the project "doing Itch-E & Scratch-E keeps taking me deeper into my head and my feet. I keep forgetting the rules - until I come to the conclusion that there aren't any".
Inspired by the remnants of the post punk/electronic/noise scene of the 80's, and coinciding with the rise of "techno" and rave culture in the early 90’s, Itch-E & Scratch-E were born at the forefront of a movement quickly gathering momentum. The album Itch-E Kitch-E Koo (1992) spawned the single ‘Sweetness and Light’, which became a crossover hit breaking down barriers between the underground and the overground, and most recently seen at #26 in the JMag’s peer-voted Greatest Australian Songs of All Time.
Fast-forward 15 years from Itch-E and Scratch-E’s first beats and, after a few beers, the duo found themselves in Scratch-E’s home studio making music. A natural reunion considering, as Paul surmises, “it's hard finding musicians that can finish your musical sentences and bounce an idea around like a game of Chinese table tennis. They come around rarely, and even when they do, they can drive you insane”. The guys had a ball, so a weekly date followed, jamming together into the wee hours of the morning. Those sessions can now be heard on their new album HOORAY FOR EVERYTHING!!!
HOORAY FOR EVERYTHING!!! includes the mental ‘Stretch-E’ which is a banging collection of elastic sounds and classic Itch-E & Scratch-E melody. Elsewhere, a cheeky mash-up with SCRIBE's ‘F.R.E.S.H’ has been imaginatively titled ‘r.e.f.r.e.s.h’. But the first taste from the new album will be the boundary crushing ‘Other Planets’, featuring vocals from New York MC MDNA who Paul met years ago as a Dissociatives fan on tour in Paris. When Paul bumped into him five years later in New York, a collaboration was spawned around a new Itch-E and Scratch-E backing track that blew all involved away.
Itch-E & Scratch-E’s first live shows in over a decade can be seen from January 15 – 31 at the Big Day Out nationally, where the Boiler Room will bear witness to an all-consuming sensory experience from Australian electronic music pioneers. And in case you needed yet another reason to catch them live, they’ll be joined onstage by the legendary MC Scribe (Sydney and Melbourne only) in a nod to the genre-defying album due later this year.
Andy Rantzen, the duo’s other half, sums it up perfectly: “after not working together for almost ten years we were very curious, and very nervous, about what might happen in the studio. As it turned out, I had become itchier than I used to be, and Paul had become scratchier than he used to be."
HOORAY FOR EVERYTHING!!! will be released this May.
First single ‘Other Planets’ will be released February 26.

Hey kids,
it's been a while between drinks (or whatever) since my last site went up (or down), so you may ask...how did i get here, what are we doing, how are you going? well, in the years since panic room, i've been behind the scenes making some shit that i love. it just hasn't comeunder the [paul mac] logo. i've just been creating some stuff that makes me love the future.
i did some stuff with the chair for "young modern"..., toured the world with them, got lost and went mad in a tourbus, blogged about it, wrote some crazy theatrical shit for frank woodley (legendary oz performance comic), did my first film score "beautiful"(if you are looking at the DVD store/torrent sites), remixed faker "are you magnetic", lenka "trouble is a friend", shelley harland "wonder" amongst others. kept doing crazy remixes and DJ sets with my alter ego and partner in crime... stereogamous, wrote some songs with the cassettekids (i love those guys!!!!), done some way experimental tech with my previous partner in crime, itch-e (stay tuned folks..... some really nice tech is coming!), been working on whatever the next paul mac album will be (but you have to trust me here. i'm pretty slow as the quality control is pretty fucken high, that's why i'm taking so long, but trust me. when we get there it will be worth it!!!) and some cool new mixes to come outta
new york etc.
anyways, i'm boring myself with what might be, and waiting to just shut up and put it out, but just want you to know that what you love is what you get, and what you get you give back, and i'll see ya real soon with some nu tunes you are gonna love.

This was used for the closing titles. I got The Scare to do a fucked up rendition of the theme with me joining them on keys. Too much fun. Love these guys.

The most melodramatic part where it all goes pearshaped. Full dramatic opera baby!

The first real part of the film that will scare you! I love this one - Got the string section to bend with my moods. Good, good times.

beautiful the movie. soundtrack by paul mac
Hey Peeps,
I've just finished my first movie score which I am super proud of, so I wanted to share a bit of it to those that are interested. I don't think I'll release it but I'm putting my fave bits up on my myspace player for you to listen to.
"Beautiful" is a low budget aussie movie portraying the darker side of suburbia. It's in cinemas now so be sure to check it out.
Today I've put these tracks up:
1. Beautiful. This is the opening title sequence. It's kind of a fractured fucked up fairytale piece that came to me as I was riding my motorbike.
2. The Backyard of Earthy Delights. This is for when one of the characters Danny goes wandering through the neighbours garden looking for evidence of nastiness.
3. On A Mission. Danny goes to confront the killer - a mash of string and electronics.
4. Sherrie's Lament - This piece is for when Sherrie goes to have an abortion. The pictures moved me so much I wrote possibly the saddest peice of music I've ever written. When I first played this to the producer and director they were both crying. I used the opportunity to ask for more budget so I could have real strings and they ended up saying yes. yaaaaaaay!
So that's it for now, stay posted and I'll chuck up some more music from the film soon.

Mr Whippy & More!
Hey peeps,
From time to time i get some bizarre requests for production stuff, but this latest one is worth sharing.
Vivacity asked me to remix "Greensleeves" (the classic Mr Whippy van theme) for a promotion of outdoor events they've been doing.
At first i thought it was a kind of a strange idea, but when I did it, I ended up loving it! Everyone that's heard it is into it too.
Anyway, they made a short, cool clip for it which is now up on youtube.

Mac & Woodley
Paul Mac has written the music for a new show that's just about to open in good ol' Sydney town! Frank Woodley one half of much loved duo, Lano and Woodley stars in POSSESSED. The show has been described as 'a wildly physical feast of comic imagination' a love story set in a basement featuring all original music by Paul Mac.
The show opens at the Sydney Opera House on June 10 and tickets are available from Sydneyoperahouse.com or Ticketek.
Paul Mac has been as busy as ever of late with POSSESSED, writing the title music for Australian film "Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger" and mixing Mr G's radio and club smash "Naughty Girl", he is also the host for BigPond Music's concert series, Monday Night Live.

Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger
The soundtrack to the new Australian movie Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger is in store now, with the film starring Keisha Castle-Hughes and Toni Collette, opening nationally on March 20.
Paul Mac's lead track "The Only One" sits rather nicely alongside a host of other cool Australian artists including label mate Missy Higgins with her track "The Wrong Girl".
"The Only One" was written by Paul Mac specifically for the film, and features stunning vocals from Sydney songstress Bertie Blackman and the Sydney Children's Choir.

Paul Plays The Great Escape
This Easter long weekend sees Paul head out to the Newington Armory in Sydney for the Great Escape Festival. Paul will be performing with his band and vocalists on the Saturday night and will be joining his mates Silverchair on the Friday night. This will be the fourth show Paul will have played with the 'Chair in the last couple of months after joining them for their very special warm up gig at the Gaelic Club, Perth's Rock-It Festival and Adelaide's Clipsal 5000. In other news Paul's remix of the Gorillaz track 'Dirty Harry' has been embraced by radio across the country as has his own third single from PANIC ROOM, the soulful "Love Declaration". Silverchair Return With The Mac
Having just arrived home from touring the country with his band, Mac is joining his great mates Silverchair in the rehearsal studio as they make final preparations for three big outdoor shows they will perform at in the next two months.
The band has announced that Mac will perform with them as special guest keyboardist on their upcoming shows to temporarily fill the shoes of regular sideman Julian Hamilton who is currently touring Europe with his group, The Presets.
Mr Mac has been busy of late touring and promoting his new solo album "Panic Room". He has worked with Silverchair in the studio on their last two albums and did one song with them once at the ARIA's but this is the first time he will have played a full concert with the group.
Silverchair will perform at the following events:
March 19: Rockit, Perth
March 24: Clipsal 500, Adelaide
April 14: Great Escape, Sydney
April 15: Great Escape, Sydney (Paul and his band are also doing their own set)
Tickets are on sale for now for each of these shows.

Return Of The Mac
While you were at the beach Paul Mac was busy.
Studio stints for The Gorillaz and Silverchair kicked off his Christmas.
Over the new year he enjoyed another top 10 club hit with "It's Not Me, It's You" - the second track to be lifted from his acclaimed album "Panic Room".
Last week, following his standout Homebake set, he was added to the bill for Sydney's Good Vibrations Festival alongside groove luminaries like James Brown and Shaun Ryder. That all happens in the harbour city on February 18.
Following this Mr Mac is cooking up a string of special gigs at Universities around the country as well as a few other dates to help spread the "Panic Room" word.
This touring will climax with an appearance at The Great Escape Festival in Sydney over Easter.

Gorillaz Remix
Not one to sit back and relax for even a mere moment, Paul Mac recently remixed the latest single ('Dirty Harry') from two-dimensional superstars Gorillaz. The song's original version can be found on the Gorillaz critically acclaimed album 'Demon Days'. Mixed in Mac's Panic Room studio and featuring his trademark sound Mac had a heap of fun working on the track. Seems radio love it too with a number of stations across the country already playing it!

Good Vibrations
To celebrate the New Year and PANIC ROOM's second top 10 club track, the break up song with attitude ("It's Not Me, It's You"), Paul is heading out on the road for his first shows of 2006. Just announced is his inclusion in the stellar line-up for the Good Vibrations Festival in Sydney on the 18th February. Paul will be joined by his band, multi vocalists including Peta Morris, Abby Dobson, Ngaiire and the temple of ecstasy choir. There may even be additional surprise guests on the day! It's Not Me It's You Clip
Paul recently shot a new clip for the track 'It's Not Me It's You' which will be previewed on Channel [V]'s What U Want today and shown on Video Hits and Rage this weekend. The clip which is again directed by James Hackett see's Paul being a judge and also features hot new vocalist Ngaiire.

Special guests on all shows will be his good mates The Presets and Hermitude and now completing the tour's stellar lineup is DJ Seymour. Best known for his long running residency at "Club Kooky" in Sydney, he's also been kept busy by the fashionistas spinning numerous Fashion Weeks in Sydney, New York, Milan, London and Melbourne. Seymour has also remixed a host of artists including The Dissociatives, Wolfmother, and The Presets and he is the man behind the now legendary Sauna Sessions compilations.

Paul's Panicking
Paul Mac has announced some select live performances next month which will be his first solo dates in over three years and each will feature the extravagant band and multi vocalists lineup he's dubbed "The Paul Mac Experience".
Dates, venues and booking information are as follows:
Wednesday November 23 - A&I Hall, Bangalow
Thursday November 24 - Tivoli Theatre, Brisbane
Friday November 25 - Metro Theatre, Sydney
Sunday November 27 - Prince of Wales, Melbourne

Paul is also performing at Sydney's Homebake Festival which sold out in record time this year.
These live dates will help to launch Paul's forthcoming album, "Panic Room". The disc's lead single, "Sunshine Eyes", debuted in the national top 30 this week and the highly anticipated album will hit the streets on October 16th.
Its predecessor - 2001's "3000 Feet High" - was conceived in the Blue Mountains and this was reflected in many of its more chilled out moments. However, the new CD was spawned in Sydney's inner west and reflects the more intense energy and emotions of the big city. It was actually all recorded in Paul's new home studio - the Panic Room - so it's only fitting that this creative haven has given the new album both its name and its introspective title track.
Like "3000 Feet High", the disc features vocalists Abby Dobson and Peta Morris. Other high profile guest singers this time around include Luke Steele from the Sleepy Jackson, Lenka from Decoder Ring and former Superjesus front person, Sarah McLeod. "Panic Room" also features exciting new voices like Papua New Guinea's Ngaiire and NZ soul sensation Aaradhna.
"I've been working on my new album for the past couple of years and I'm really excited it's finally about to released", says Mac. "I can't wait to bring this album alive on stage with the singers, the choir and my band".
The Paul Mac Experience will feature multiple vocalists from both of his albums plus a few other surprises.

Mac's Back
Clubland legend Paul Mac finally returns to the CD racks on Sunday September 25 with his new single "Sunshine Eyes".
The song was inspired by a New York affair - and particularly by that special moment when you see yourself reflected in your lover's eyes.

He also relocated from the Blue Mountains to Sydney's inner west where he created a home studio and a forthcoming album that are both called 'Panic Room'.
The first taste of this new disc and new outlook is 'Sunshine Eyes' - an irresistible slice of melantronica. It's all over the radio right now and its striking video is simultaneously Channel V's "Ripe Clip" and has the coverted "Buzz" rotation on MTV. Like Paul's previous hits "Just The Thing" and "The Sound Of Breaking Up", the song features the unmistakable vocals of Peta Morris.
The "Sunshine Eyes" single will also feature the title track from "Panic Room". This heavier, groove based piece has already made the top 10 on the ARIA club chart as well as receiving loads of JJJ support.
Paul will return to live touring later this year with an appearance on the already sold-out "Homebake" Festival. He is expected to announce a handful of other dates over coming weeks.

Hey Folks
It's been a while between drinks I must say, but as you may have heard on the radio or in the clubs I'm perilously close to being back with a new album "Panic Room" (also the name of my studio). I've been working on it for about 4 years (in between Dissociative stuff) and it's all very thunderbolt of lightening... very, very frightening!! and exciting being about to give birth to my new musical baby.
The first single is a bit of a double A side, with the track "Panic Room" featuring Lenka (you may know her from such bands as Decoder Ring) and "Sunshine Eyes" featuring my soul sister peta morris. There are some cool remixes including my own Stereogamous extension, a pumping workout byMelbourne faves Ivan Gough and Grant Smillie, and a collaboration with Nick Littlemore from pnau. Hope you like it!
Stay tuned for website rebuild with cool new features, and I'll try to keep you posted as info comes to hand, feet and lips!
